Macau-Hong Kong Experience

By h3artinwander - October 23, 2019

Couple of years ago, we thought that being able to go on an international trip is far from reality. We always dream of having a vacation abroad, always curious about other culture and always excited to experience what is it like to be in foreign country. Who would have thought that our fantasies would be realized.

Going to Hong Kong would be more practical if you have a side trip to Macau as well. It is like hitting two birds in one stone. Macau is only an hour ferry ride from HK. In our case, we did it the other way around. Our flight was Davao-Cebu-Macau and Hong Kong-Manila-Davao.

Macau

The highlight of the trip was really HK more than Macau, but unexpectedly, we’ve enjoyed Macau as much we’ve enjoyed HK! Macau is so organized and beautiful. A very rich country we must say. The casinos are impressive and excellently architectured. It is extravagant and lavishly designed. Indeed, it is the “Las Vegas of Asia.” But the best thing about Macau is transportation - it is 100% free! Yep you heard it right, shuttle buses in Macau are free, so casino hopping is so easy and convenient. In fact, we haven’t spent a single peso in transportation because we availed the free shuttle bus from the airport to our lodging, casino hopping, and of course from lodging to pier going to HK. Just do some research for the bus schedule online. By the way another great thing in Macau is the free food samples! You will never get hungry in Macau because free food samples are everywhere!

Where to stay in Macau
We booked our accommodation at Airbnb and we stayed here. The location is quite good. The room is clean and the hosts are very responsive. We super like our stay here because it is very accessible. It is just a walking distance from Galaxy Hotel where free shuttle buses are available.

Ruins of St. Paul
Casino Hopping
The Famous Portuguese Egg Tart
Koi Kei Bakery

Hong Kong

Hong Kong is one of the most expensive cities in the world. It is a place where shopping has no end and it really is – I swear! I think all the luxuries in the world can be found in Hong Kong from bags, jewelries, gadgets, restaurants, everything literally.  But of course we did not go shopping cos we’re on a budget. Poor travelers lang po kami. We just did sightseeing, city tour, experience their transportation, food trip and lots and lots of walking (more than 10,000 steps everyday) Promise!

Where to stay in Hong Kong
We booked our accommodation at Airbnb and we stayed here. The host is really nice and accommodating. She even gave us free cookies upon check in. The place is clean and comfortable. We chose to stay in Mong Kok since it is cheap and very accessible. The location is perfect since everything you need is available within the vicinity. Restaurants, bakeshops, street food, money changer, shopping area and MTR are just walking distance. And the best thing is it is near the A21 bus stop going to the airport. Saves you a lot cash since it is only 33 HKD!

Shopping at Mong Kok

Too bad we were not able to experience the Ngong Ping 360 because it was not available at the time of our entire visit due to security and safety inspections. We also did not include Disneyland in our itinerary because the castles were under renovation at that time and we feel like maybe we’ll just visit Tokyo Disneyland in the near future. Hopefully.

Tips

We highly recommend that you buy a sim card upon arrival at the airport. Google Maps is really your best friend especially in DIY trip. In our case we bought sim card at Macau International Airport. It is a 7-day unlimited data that can be used both in Macau and HK. There’s no need to have one sim card each. You just have to share the connection via tethering or hotspot.
Take advantage of the free shuttle buses in Macau
Take advantage of the free food samples so you won’t need to spend money for snacks
Never miss the famous Portuguese egg tart in Macau
Always bring your passport with you since police in the casinos randomly checks your passport especially when you look younger than your age. That’s what happened to our friend
Always bring water with you. Drinking water in Macau and HK is not cheap
Invest in a comfortable rubber shoes. Your feet will thank you for that
Try local food. You might not like it at first but your taste bud will eventually adjust to it.
Take public transportation. It is really efficient and convenient.
When shopping in Mong kok always negotiate for the price. Everything is negotiable there.
If you’re a milk tea lover then you’ll definitely love HK. Milk tea shops are everywhere so take advantage of it.
Always book at Klook and get every discount you can avail. It will save you a lot of cash.
